PSS® MERLIN® DATA RADIO UNIT User Instructions3354330: Edition B: April 2005 : Subject to Modification (A4-D-P)This User Instruction describes the enhancements in the operation of the Sentinel electronic monitoringunit when used in conjunction with PSS® Merlin® Data Radio Unit and the PSS® Merlin® TelemetrySystem. It is important that the instruction be read in conjunction with the User Instructions for thefollowing products:1. Sentinel2. PSS® Merlin® Telemetry System and the3. Associated self contained respiratory protection apparatus (SCBA).For Your SafetyuThe assembly of the PSS® Merlin® Data Radio Unit to the SCBA and Sentinel must be carried outby Dräger personnel.uRefer to and take note of the ‘For Your Safety’ statements in the User Instruction supplied with theSentinel electronic monitoring unit.uRefer to and take note of the ‘For Your Safety’ statements in the User Instruction supplied with theself contained respiratory protection equipment (SCBA).uUse equipment and any approved ancillary units only in the combination as outlined in this Instructionfor Use.uUse equipment only for the purpose as specified in this User Instruction.uThe Merlin ECB and Portable Unit meet the FCC requirements regarding exposure of humanbeings to radio frequency radiation. Occupational/Controlled limits apply when persons are exposedto radio frequency radiation as a consequence of their employment provided these persons arefully aware of and exercise control over their exposure. Awareness of exposure can be accomplishedby use of warning labels or by specific training or education through appropriate means, such asan RF safety program in a work environment.Liability StatementResponsibility for reliable function of this equipment and approved ancillary units transfers to the owneror operator when the equipment is serviced, or repaired by untrained personnel, (not employed orauthorised by Dräger) or when used in a manner not conforming to its intended use.Changes or modifications to the equipment not expressly approved by Drager Safety could void theuser’s authority to operate the equipment. Description and Intended UseThe PSS® Merlin® Data Radio Unit provides ameans of 2way digital data interfacecommunication between the wearer of the selfcontained respiratory protection apparatus (fittedwith a Sentinel and Data Radio Unit) and anexternal support control module (Entry ControlBoard - ECB).To achieve this communication, the PSS® Merlin®Telemetry System modules (ECB and Data RadioUnit) interface with the Dräger Sentinel electronicmonitoring unit. The Data Radio Unit is battery-powered andincorporates an integral digital radio transmitterand receiver with associated antenna. The radiois programmed with a radio identification codetogether with a unique User Code. A label on theradio identifies the radio identification code. The ‘Electronic Tally’ that is supplied is alsoencoded with the same codes as thecorresponding Data Radio Unit. A label on the‘Tally Key’ identifies the numeric code of the userand the identification code for the Data Radio Unit.Refer to the User Instruction for the PSS® Merlin®Telemetry System for full details of the PSS®Merlin® Data Radio Unit.OperationLog On ProcedureuActivate the Sentinel to ‘operating mode’. TheRed LED on the IR link cover at the rear ofthe Sentinel begins to flash.Note: An intermittent short ‘flash’ Off of the RedLED signals a low charge condition of the radiobattery. Fit a fully charged battery.uPass the tally key to controller of the EntryControl Board (ECB). The controller willinitiate a logon to the ECB. The Green LEDon the IR link cover at the rear of the Sentinelbegins to flash when the logon is establishedindicating a successful radio link and the displayshows Fig. 1.uThe wearer is now released for entry to therisk area.In Use - CommunicationLoss of contactIf there is a loss of radio contact between theradio of the ECB and the Data Radio Unit thenthe ‘lost’ communication icon (Fig. 2) will bedisplayed on the Sentinel display accompaniedby an audible ‘bleep’ tone. During thecommunication failure the ‘lost’ communicationicon will be displayed alternating with the normalSentinel icon (Fig. 1). In addition, the ‘Green’LED at the rear of the Sentinel will stop flashing. If at any time radio contact is re-established then theSentinel will emit a ‘bleep’ tone and the ‘lost’communication icon will be cancelled. In addition, the ‘Green’ LED of the Bodyguard will begin flashing.Important Safety Note: In the case of possiblepermanent loss of radio contact then the wearerof the Sentinel must take appropriate actions inline with established user guidelines and controlprocedures.Voluntary Withdraw FunctionShould the wearer of the SCBA make a decisionto withdraw from an incident, a signal can betransmitted to the ECB by pressing and holdingthe RH button of the Sentinel until the radio icon(Fig. 3) is displayed. On observing the radio icon, the wearer should release the RH button. Thedisplay of the Sentinel will change back to‘operational mode’ (Fig.1).On acknowledgement from the controller of theECB of the decision to withdraw the Sentinel emitsa short audible bleep alarm, during which timethe radio icon is displayed. When the alarm stopsthe Sentinel will change back to ‘operational mode’.Evacuate FunctionThis function of the Sentinel is initiated by thecontroller at the ECB.On receipt of the signal from the ECB the Sentinelunit will emit a repeating audible ‘bleep’ alarm andthe ‘running man’ icon (Fig. 4) will appear in thedisplay of the Sentinel. To acknowledge the evacuation request to thecontroller at the ECB the wearer must press theRH button of the Sentinel — a single ‘bleep’ isemitted. Immediately release the button and thedisplay will change to ‘operational mode’ (Fig. 1).stluaFsesuaCsnoituloS'hsalf'trohstnettimretnIDEL'deR'ehtfoffOyrettabwoLyrettabegrahCegrahctonlliwyrettaByrettabnoslanimretegrahcytriDegrahcsidpeeDyrettabtnepSslanimretnaelCsevisarbaesutoNoDfomuminimarofegrahCkcehcer-sruoh42wenhtiwecalpeRelbmessatonlliwyrettaBoidarotsediugliatevodytriDsediugliatevoddegamaDdemmajsnipgnikcoLoidardnayrettabnaelCecalperdnatcepsnImetidegamadgnisunoitcakcehCyekesaelergnirpstonlliwyrettaBnoitresnino)hcated(kcabyekesalerehtfo.yekesaelerno)s(nipnekorBsediugliatevodytriDmsinahcemgnikcoldegamad/ytriDyekwenesUyekesaelerehttresnIyawayrettabllupdnayllaunamoidardnayrettabnaelCecivreSregärDtcatnoCFault, Cause, RemedyFig. 319061907Fig. 41905Fig. 10790Fig. 2Alarm FunctionOn acknowledgement by the controller at the ECBof an alarm (either a Panic or PASS alarm) theSentinel emits a short audible tone, during whichtime the radio icon is displayed. Following the shortacknowlegement tone, the Sentinel reverts backto main alarm.Log Off ProcedureAll wearers of SCBA that are Logged On to an ECBmust return to the entry control point (ECB controller)to ensure that the Log Off procedure is followed. The procedures must be carried out undersupervision and control of the controller of the ECB.uThe SCBA is to be shut down by the weareras described in the After Use section of theUser Instructions supplied with the equipment,i.e. remove facepiece, close cylinder valve, ventthe system of pressure. The display of theSentinel will show ‘0’ psi and ‘0’ TTW.Note: The Sentinel will remain in operatingmode until it switched ‘Off’ [deactivated].uAt the ECB the controller will remove the tallyfrom the associated channel then hand the tallyover to the wearer of the SCBA. The wearershould switch ‘Off’ the Sentinel. A Log Offradio signal will be transmitted from the DataRadio Unit to the ECB. After up to 20 secondsthe channel screen of the ECB will switch ‘Off’and the associated Data Radio Unit will returnto ‘Sleep Mode’.Important Note: If during an incident apermanent breakdown in communication hasoccurred between the ECB and a Logged OnData Radio Unit, it will be necessary to removeand then refit the battery of Data Radio Unit toinitiate sleep mode.Routine MaintenanceRefer to the User Instructions for the following;the Sentinel, the PSS® Merlin® Telemetry Systemand the associated self contained respiratoryprotection apparatus (SCBA).
